Most home centers stock prehung exterior doors in a limited number of styles. Common jamb widths for stock doors are 4-9/16 in. and 6-9/16 in., and they usually include 2-in. wide brick molding for exterior trim. These doors work great for newly constructed walls and for replacing doors in newer homes. But if, after measuring the jamb width and opening sizes for your existing door, you discover that you need a different size jamb or that your exterior trim is wider, then you’ll save a lot of headaches by ordering a door to your exact specifications.

A Fascia board is most easily described as the board that your gutters are attached to. In many Toronto area homes, this board will be a 1 by 8 or 1 by 10 fascia board. It's purpose is generally aesthetic and provides an attachment point for gutters, but can also provide a barrier between the outside and the inside of the attic or the base of the roof rafters. Fascia boards need maintenance or replacement often, they are usually not rot or decay resistant like pressure treated or cedar, and due to their thin profile are especially prone to rot.
Soffit is very important for both appearance and ventilation of your home and attic. Soffit is the area parallel to the ground underneath the overhang of the roof. On many houses this area can be open soffit, which is all wood, and has exposed roof rafter tails. One of the problems with this type of soffit is that the ends of the rafters tend to wick up moisture and rot. The solution is to keep the painted and weather tight, or to replace or sister them. Other styles have enclosed soffit coverage, with a 1 by board that is painted.
